If you've never been to or planned a wedding before, you may be wondering what the roles that are traditionally for the men of the wedding party look like and what they involve. For the men, it's more than just turning up and looking great in a wedding suit, there are key responsibilities on the big day too. From the groom, to the best man, groomsmen, ushers and the page boys, we break it all down for you here, highlighting the most important jobs that each person traditionally performs.
The Groom
The groom is, of course, one half of the marrying couple. As with their partner, the groom will have lots to think about for the big day. From the proposal up to the vows and the honeymoon, they'll be heavily involved in the key decisions made for the wedding including, but not limited to; choosing the wedding venue, trying the food, selecting the drinks package, purchasing the wedding rings, and preparing a speech!
He will need all the help he can get from his best man and ushers to ensure that he looks and feels great on the big day and that his speech hits all the right notes.
The Best Man
To help the groom every step of the way is the best man. The best man's considerable duties means the choice of best man is crucial to the wedding day running smoothly! A best man's role is primarily to help the groom, so he takes on several responsibilities.
From arranging the stag night, to looking after the rings, right through to delivering a witty speech and organising the ushers, his role in the wedding proceedings is an honour but also quite considerable. So, be sure to choose someone you trust, that is organised and responsible.
Top tip: You can always have multiple best men or even a best woman. The choice is yours, but this option could help spread the responsibility of the role.

Groomsmen and Ushers
Groomsmen and Ushers are essentially assistants to the best man so he can more easily support the groom as he is tying the knot.
Forming part of the official bridal party, the ushers are at their most visible at the beginning of the ceremony, showing guests to their seats and handing out the Order of Service.
Groomsmen can have a similar role to the ushers, but for a larger wedding, you may prefer your groomsmen to be standing with the groom at the alter while the ushers mingle and greet the guests. Also, many couples opt for matching ties for their groomsmen to create a cohesive and well-put-together wedding party.
Their role may be smaller than the best man's, but they are still important for the smooth running of the day!
Top tip: An usher role could also be a great way of involving those who cannot be in the main wedding party (men and women) but are keen to offer support on the day.
Page Boys
If you want to include a younger boy in your wedding without giving them too much responsibility, then this role could be perfect! Traditionally, the page boy held the bride's train. However, it is now more common for them to walk down the aisle with the flower girl or, if you are not having a separate ring bearer, to carry the wedding rings down the aisle.
So, their role is mostly just to look adorable walking down the aisle and in your wedding photos, and it's a great way to include children in your big day!
