The Ultimate 5 Valentine's Day Movies

Jenny Davies Updated:
8th of March 2023

Valentine's Day is on a Monday this year, meaning many people will prefer a home-cooked meal rather than a fancy restaurant or a night on the town. If you and your partner are planning on having a quiet, relaxed night in this Valentine's Day, you may be wondering how to fill the evening. Well, what's more fitting for a lazy day or evening than snuggling up on the sofa watching a movie with your other half (or besties!)

That's why we've put together a list of our 5 favourite films for Valentine's Day this year, including some movies that you might not have thought of. If you and your partner want to find out which movie is tailored to you based on your beliefs and opinions, complete this fantastic flow chart quiz!

The Time Traveler's Wife

Based on the novel by Audrey Niffenegger, The Time Traveler's Wife follows the intriguing story of a man who has a rare genetic disorder that causes him to travel back and forth in time. If you haven't already watched this old classic then you definitely need to! It's a beautiful reminder of how short-lived life can be, but also that love will always find a way. We would definitely recommend watching this one with your other half.

500 Days of Summer

This rom-com is very different to any other and portrays a huge amount of realness and raw emotion. Recounting the path of a relationship from start to end, 500 Days of Summer has a real mixture between optimism and practicality. With a fresh spin on the classic romantic narrative, we felt that this movie definitely deserves a watch on Valentine's Day, especially if you are having a night in with the girls! This film will be particularly of interest to anyone who has recently experienced heartbreak (don't worry, we've all been there!)

10 Things I Hate About You

One of our absolute favourites, 10 Things I Hate About You is an old classic featuring Heath Ledger. A witty rewording of Shakespeare's 'The Taming of the Shrew', this film tugs at the heartstrings whilst providing the perfect amount of humour. Without ruining the plot too much, a family rule forbids Bianca (the younger, more outgoing sister) from dating until her boy-hating older sister Kat gets a boyfriend. Connections are set up which lead to an unexpected and utterly adorable romance.

Gone Girl

Gone Girl is an absolute gem if you're looking for a mind-blowing film with suspense. This creepy masterpiece is so engaging it keeps you on the edge of your seat. It revolves around Amy Dunne, who goes missing whilst her husband Nick is suspected of murder. Opinions about the outcome of this film are very controversial, so you definitely need to give it a watch to decide what you and your partner think!

The Great Gatsby

Based on the 1925 novel by F. Scott Fitzgerald, The Great Gatsby is full of hidden meanings and ambiguity. As the beautiful yet tragic love story unravels between Gatsby and Daisy, the audience are really engaged in the longing involved with forbidden love. This modern classic is great for lovers of history, since the film is set in the lavish era of the roaring 20's when prohibition was law. If you're looking for a story with intricate characters and symbolic meanings, then The Great Gatsby is perfect.

If you're still unsure of which film you want to immerse yourself in this Valentine's Day, head over to the flowchart quiz if you haven't already to help you decide!
