Colette, a hospital doctor and Ian, a vet at Chester Zoo met in November 2017 at a speed dating event. Colette went with 4 of her housemates and Ian had to date all of them in turn. But it was Colette with her fun, live-wire personality, that caught his eye. When Ian knocked on the door for his second date with Colette, he was greeted by her 4 friends, ready to see her off! Fast forward to Colette’s birthday on 10th September 2019. Ian proposed in a magical way at Taronga Zoo, Sydney, Australia.

The Proposal

Ian had been planning a perfect proposal for six months. He had always wanted to work as a vet at Taronga Zoo in Sydney and has visited for work 5 times. So, Ian knows the team there well. Once he saw a trick performed with the Galah cockatoo, he knew it would be such a cool trick to propose to someone. So, when he heard he was going to be sent over on a work trip, he knew this was a perfect opportunity! Ian even kept the ring safe on the journey to Australia in his carry-on! Colette came out to join him for the 3 weeks around her birthday. Unfortunately, the weather wasn’t the best but it didn’t remove the magic. Ian bought Colette a bunch of flowers for her birthday which were called blushing bride! Then there was the incredible proposal as the cockatoo brought the ring to Colette. Ian then made a heartwarming, emotional speech. Make sure you watch the video below to see the amazing proposal in full. After the proposal, about 150 people in the audience were clapping and congratulating the couple. A large group of school kids made the crowd feel bigger, and even more amazing and supportive. The newly-engaged couple were treated as VIPs at the Zoo for the rest of the day. They had such a treat meeting lots of the different animals behind the scenes. Unfortunately, due to COVID-19, their wedding has been postponed. But, their wedding suppliers and venue have been great and the couple have been able to provisionally rebook for the same time next year. \n
