FAQs
A registrar conducts the legal part of marriage. Their ceremony follows a set format, must take place in a licensed venue and can't include religious content. A celebrant creates a completely personal ceremony written around your story, with your choice of words, vows, readings, music and rituals, at any venue, any time indoors or out. Many couples complete the legal formalities with a simple register office appointment, then celebrate with a celebrant-led ceremony on the big day.
A humanist celebrant creates non-religious ceremonies, so there are o hymns, prayers, or religious readings. An independent celebrant, like me, has complete freedom. Your ceremony can be entirely non-religious, or it can include elements of faith, a blessing or cultural traditions that matter to you and your families. It's all about what feels right for you both. In England and Wales, neither type of ceremony is currently legally binding on its, so couples do the legal formalities separately.
Absolutely. Writing your ceremony is at the heart of what I do. Every ceremony is written from scratch, never from a template. I start by getting to know you both: how you met, your journey together, what makes you laugh and the people who matter most. I then craft your story, with your choice of vows, readings, music and rituals. You'll see drafts along the way, so you can shape it until it feels exactly right.
Of course. Many couples love to write their own vows, and I'm happy to help as much or as little as you like, from guidance and prompts to polishing your words so you feel confident saying them. If you'd like to write parts of the ceremony yourselves, or have a friend or family member contribute a reading or a few words, we'll weave everything together. It's your ceremony, and my role is to make it feel effortless.
No. because a celebrant-led ceremony isn't bound by legal wording, there's nothing you have to include. you can choose whether to exchange vows, rings or both, whether to have readings, music or rituals, and how formal or relaxed it feels. The only limits are your venue's own rules, for examples on candles or confetti, and I'll check those for you. Most couples like to include a few classic moments, and I'll guide you on what works beautifully, but the final choice is always yours.
Absolutely, and I'd be honoured to. Every ceremony I create is written entirely around the couple, using your chosen names, pronouns and language. There's no fixed script or gendered tradition to work around, so you can keep, reinvent or leave out anything you like. Love is love, and your ceremony should celebrate yours openly and joyfully.
Yes, and it's one of he great strengths of an independent celebrant ceremony. I can blend traditions, readings, blessings and rituals from both your backgrounds, alongside non religious elements, in whatever balance feels right for you. It's a lovely way to honour both families and show how your two worlds coe together. We'll talk through what matters most to each of you and create a ceremony that respects both.
Yes, getting to know you is the most important part of my work. We'll start with a relaxed discovery call, followed by a meeting, in person or by video, where' I'l hear your story and we'll shape your ceremony together. I'll visit your venue beforehand to plan the practical details, and I'll run a rehearsal if you with so you and your wedding party feel confident and relaxed. I'm on hand by phone, WhatsApp and email throughout, and I'll arrive in good time on the day so everything runs smoothly.
As soon as you have your date and venue, as popular dates, especially summer Saturdays, can book up 12 to 18 months ahead. Booking early also gives us plenty of time to get to know each other and create your ceremony without any rush. that said, if your wedding is sooner, do get in touch. I'll always do my best to help, and shorter notice ceremonies can be just as special.
Not at the moment. In England and Wales, independent celebrants can't currently conduct legally binding marriages or civil partnerships. Mpost couples complete the legal formalities with a short, single register office appointment, and then celebrate with their personal celebrant-led ceremony on the big day. The law is currently under review, and I'll keep couples updated on any changes. At present this is unlikely to change before late 2029, or 2030.
