The Spur Battery Amphitheatre
The Spur Battery Amphitheatre at Fort Amherst offers a fascinating insight into the fort's history. Constructed during the Napoleonic Wars, it was designed as an outwork to enhance the fort's defences. Its main features are a sunken courtyard, which has been restored as an open-air auditorium. This venue blends the Forts Napoleonic past with a modern functionality that will create a memorable atmosphere and offers a truly unique and historic setting for your wedding. The grass areas offer you the opportunity to place a Marquee for your reception if you wish to make the day complete. Whether you're planning an intimate gathering, festival style or a larger celebration, the Spur Battery's charm and character makes it a standout choice.
The Grand Magazine
The Grand Magazine is a historic structure that served as the main powder store for the fort. The building laid buried, undiscovered for years until it was lovingly uncovered, restored & brought back to life. Today, it stands as a testament to the fort's military history & is part of our site's fascinating heritage.
Fort Amherst offers two unique settings for intimate weddings. Say “I do” in the historic tunnels, an atmospheric underground venue ideal for ceremonies of up to 20 guests, or choose the charming Gatehouse for a romantic elopement with up to 10 guests. Rich in history, character and exclusivity, both venues provide a memorable backdrop for a truly personal celebration.

Yes we do.
ypically, we do not allow outside caterers for weddings. However, depending on your requirements, we may be able to make an exception at our discretion if we are unable to meet your catering needs. Please note that the hire of the Spur Battery Amphitheatre is on a venue-hire-only basis and includes a bar service. All catering for events held at the amphitheatre must be arranged separately, and caterers will need to be brought in by the hirer.
You will have access to the venue from 9:00am on the day of your ceremony. Subject to availability and staffing levels, we may be able to grant access the day before to allow for set-up. Please note that this is at our discretion and may incur an additional charge.
The reception must conclude by 11:00pm. An additional 30 minutes will be provided after this time for guests to depart and for the clearing and removal of personal items and decorations.
We do not have any specific noise restrictions in place; however, all receptions must finish by 11:00pm in accordance with our venue hire conditions.
Fireworks are permitted at the venue; however, they must be supplied and operated by a fully licensed and insured professional provider. Evidence of valid public liability insurance and relevant licences may be required prior to the event. Any fireworks display must be agreed with the venue in advance and comply with all applicable safety regulations.
Only natural, biodegradable confetti is permitted. Confetti must be used on the designated grassed areas and kept well away from any historic buildings or structures to help protect and preserve the site. Please ensure all confetti complies with these requirements.
Candles are permitted on site; however, they must be used safely and comply with all relevant British fire safety regulations and legislation. We recommend that candles are securely housed in suitable holders or enclosed containers and are positioned away from flammable materials. The venue reserves the right to request the removal of any candle displays that are considered a fire risk.
