About Newburgh Priory

Newburgh Priory occupies a historic country house estate in the Howardian Hills near Coxwold, North Yorkshire, set within extensive grounds of lakes, formal gardens, woodland and rolling countryside. The house, originally founded as a monastery in 1145 and extended across centuries, stands amidst this landscape with uninterrupted views toward the Hambleton Hills and the White Horse of Kilburn.

Couples can take exclusive use of the estate for their wedding day, with civil ceremonies licensed to take place in any of three Georgian reception rooms. The Large Drawing Room offers south-facing light and views to the gardens, the Dining Room brings high ceilings and a prominent fireplace, and the Small Drawing Room provides a more intimate setting and space for group photography.

For indoor-outdoor options, vows or a blessing or humanist ceremony can be held in the Long Gallery Ruin before the legal signing in one of the Georgian rooms or in a local church. After formalities, couples and guests can move into the grounds for drinks, dining and dancing. For larger celebrations and evening receptions of up to around 300 guests, there are marquee or tepee sites including within the Long Gallery ruins or on the Ancient Lawn at the edge of the parkland.

Historic interiors, extensive gardens and uninterrupted views form a setting for photographs and gatherings. The venue’s team supports planning from early stages through to the day itself, and couples have the flexibility to work with suppliers of their choice.

A wedding at Newburgh Priory gives you Exclusive Use – which means the House and Gardens are yours for the day – we’re also pooch and child friendly so all the family can attend!

Newburgh Priory holds a civil ceremony license so you can say vows in one of three Georgian rooms in the house from small intimate gatherings for 20 or up to 100 guests (with more to follow in the evening).

We can also offer the option of an indoor/outdoor wedding - enjoy a ceremony for up to 300 in the Long Gallery Ruin then you & your partner sign on the dotted line inside one of our Georgian licensed rooms with a registrar.

We don't charge corkage but your caterer might so just double check with them!

We don’t limit you to our “Suggested Suppliers” we can guide, advise and suggest suppliers that know our venue well but we don’t tie you in to anyone specific – the choice is yours.

Exclusive Use means you have access to the house from 8am until midnight on your wedding day. If you opt for a marquee, you can have access to the site the day before from 8.30am-6.30pm to decorate & make your own.

Carriages for your event is at midnight

We don't have specific noise restrictions.

We do allow Fireworks at the Priory – so you can finish your dream day off with a bang!

We do allow biodegradable confetti only, outside of the house and in our romantic ruins

Yes, we allow candles in sconces or similar to protect our historic surfaces from wax and flame from contact.

Although we don’t have accommodation on site we are extremely lucky to have an abundance of places on the doorstep in the village of Coxwold – Newburgh House in particular stands at the gates of the Priory so you can enjoy your first night as bride and groom a stone’s throw away with your guests local too.
