Our Sustainability Commitments

When you marry here, you give something back. Why support us? The Story Museum is a registered charity with a mission to enrich lives - especially young lives - through stories. From a child's earliest days to their teenage years, we offer a creative learning programme in family centres, schools, youth groups and at our award-winning museum, building creativity, literacy and wellbeing. We prioritise families in Oxford's least served communities and ensure price is no barrier with our free-to-access programme of tailored support. The need for our work in Oxford is clear: 26% of children grow up in poverty, and despite the city's reputation for academic excellence, disadvantaged pupils in the county perform worse than their peers nationally. We want to change this narrative with our vibrant Learning, Access and Participation programme, which last year supported nearly 13,000 children, teachers and families. All money from venue hire goes directly back into the museum's work. So when you celebrate here, you're not just having the wedding of your dreams - you're helping make stories accessible to children and families who might not otherwise have that chance. Pretty good wedding gift to the world, if you ask us.

Commitment to LGBTQIA+ Couples

The Story Museum’s mission is to enrich lives through stories by harnessing their power to nurture literacy, wellbeing and social skills, thus enabling people to fulfil their potential. We will only truly achieve this when those lives and stories reflect the world around us; when everyone feels seen and heard, and represented in our Museum. Diversity is a fact, inclusion is an act. We will actively pursue inclusion for our workforce, our creative programme and our audiences (knowing that these are inextricably linked). We will know we are achieving it when our workforce, programme and audiences reflect the diversity of modern Britain. We define inclusion as ‘a state of being and feeling valued, respected and supported. We hope that everyone in our workforce and audience feels this way when they are at the Museum. We also recognise that there are barriers to access and inclusion for certain groups, which are created by structures and institutions that have, whether from ignorance, apathy or outright prejudice, excluded them. We are committed to listening to and learning from people with this lived experience so that we work to overcome barriers where they exist. This policy extends to all our external events, including weddings and venue hires. As part of our commitment to LGBTQIA+ couples, we strive to create a welcoming and inclusive environment for all, from using inclusive language to embracing the opportunity to celebrate in ways that reflect each couple’s unique story - free from tradition if they choose, and entirely on their own terms.
