About The Story Museum

The Story Museum sits at 42 Pembroke Street, a gorgeous Grade II listed building in the centre of Oxford, offering a set of creative indoor spaces perfect for wedding celebrations. Across our two floors you'll find: a mysterious indoor woodland, a magic common room straight out of a storybook, a theatre that hosted everything from children's shows to first dances. With drinks in the sunlit courtyard and dining amongst the trees, it’s a setting that promises a truly memorable wedding day.

A family-first wedding venue in the heart of Oxford - where children can be part of the day, not an afterthought.
Your wedding day should feel like you, not like everyone else’s. If you’ve ever dreamed of swapping the predictable for the playful, the formal for the genuinely magical, The Story Museum might just be the venue you didn’t know you were looking for. Right in central Oxford, it’s a place where stories come to life.
At a glance: up to 150 guests for a drinks reception and up to 112 for a seated dinner, with exclusive day hire options available.

Across the museum you’ll find spaces unlike anywhere else - each with its own character, and each designed to feel memorable the moment you walk in:
The Whispering Wood - an atmospheric indoor forest that has to be seen to be believed (perfect for dining).
The Magic Common Room - richly decorated and ideal for drinks, canapés and conversation.
The Woodshed Theatre - a proper party space with AV and a dancefloor for your band, DJ or playlist.

Three of our immersive gallery spaces - the Enchanted Library, the Treasure Chamber and the Story Arcade - are included as standard in your wedding hire. Your guests are free to explore them as part of the celebration, and they make for genuinely extraordinary wedding photographs.

Wedding hire at The Story Museum is typically dry hire. The venue hire fee covers use of the chosen spaces and basic furniture such as tables and chairs, and couples may bring additional furniture or decorations or arrange these through an external event company. The museum is licensed for alcohol and live entertainment, and its on-site catering team can provide food and refreshments, with external caterers also able to work with couples on the wedding breakfast. The museum is fully wheelchair accessible, with step-free access to all floors via lifts.

Our Sustainability Commitments

When you marry here, you give something back. Why support us? The Story Museum is a registered charity with a mission to enrich lives - especially young lives - through stories. From a child's earliest days to their teenage years, we offer a creative learning programme in family centres, schools, youth groups and at our award-winning museum, building creativity, literacy and wellbeing. We prioritise families in Oxford's least served communities and ensure price is no barrier with our free-to-access programme of tailored support. The need for our work in Oxford is clear: 26% of children grow up in poverty, and despite the city's reputation for academic excellence, disadvantaged pupils in the county perform worse than their peers nationally. We want to change this narrative with our vibrant Learning, Access and Participation programme, which last year supported nearly 13,000 children, teachers and families. All money from venue hire goes directly back into the museum's work. So when you celebrate here, you're not just having the wedding of your dreams - you're helping make stories accessible to children and families who might not otherwise have that chance. Pretty good wedding gift to the world, if you ask us.

Commitment to LGBTQIA+ Couples

The Story Museum’s mission is to enrich lives through stories by harnessing their power to nurture literacy, wellbeing and social skills, thus enabling people to fulfil their potential. We will only truly achieve this when those lives and stories reflect the world around us; when everyone feels seen and heard, and represented in our Museum. Diversity is a fact, inclusion is an act. We will actively pursue inclusion for our workforce, our creative programme and our audiences (knowing that these are inextricably linked). We will know we are achieving it when our workforce, programme and audiences reflect the diversity of modern Britain. We define inclusion as ‘a state of being and feeling valued, respected and supported. We hope that everyone in our workforce and audience feels this way when they are at the Museum. We also recognise that there are barriers to access and inclusion for certain groups, which are created by structures and institutions that have, whether from ignorance, apathy or outright prejudice, excluded them. We are committed to listening to and learning from people with this lived experience so that we work to overcome barriers where they exist. This policy extends to all our external events, including weddings and venue hires. As part of our commitment to LGBTQIA+ couples, we strive to create a welcoming and inclusive environment for all, from using inclusive language to embracing the opportunity to celebrate in ways that reflect each couple’s unique story - free from tradition if they choose, and entirely on their own terms.

Why Couples Recommend The Story Museum

The Story Museum is a popular, unique, and magical wedding venue, praised for its intimate atmosphere and accommodating up to 50 guests. Couples particularly appreciate the helpful and professional staff who go above and beyond to ensure a smooth and memorable day, assisting with planning, decorating, and coordinating with external caterers if needed. The venue offers various spaces like the Magic Common Room, Woodshed, and Whispering Woods for different parts of the celebration, with the option for outdoor dancing in the Courtyard. The in-house bar can also cater to specific drink requests. Guests frequently comment on the venue's unique and quirky charm, making it a truly special wedding experience.

Our vision at The Story Museum is to enrich lives, especially young lives, through stories. Our mission is to achieve this by collecting great stories and sharing them in great ways at our most unusual Museum. As a registered charity, all profits from our venue hire, shop and café go directly towards our work to enrich lives through stories. Which is where we come in! By having your Wedding here you are directly helping our charitable mission and I get to help make that happen!
