FAQs

Registrars are employed by the council. In England, they carry out the legal requirements of marriage and civil partnerships and are responsible for the legal records. Registrars conduct ceremonies in licensed venues and they can't include religious elements. Overall ceremony content is limited and you may not meet them until the day itself. With a celebrant, the ceremony takes place after the short legalities, it can take place anywhere, anytime. You have more choice, contact and flexibility!

A Humanist Wedding Ceremony is rooted in humanist philosophy, it emphasizes humanist values and principles and there is some room for personalisation within the humanist framework. An independent celebrant Wedding Ceremony is not tied to a specific philosophy, officiated by celebrants who create a highly personalised and flexible ceremony to fit the couple's beliefs and preferences.

Yes, it's important to meet to discover your story and ensure that it is seamlessly woven into your ceremony. Meeting in person is preferable but virtual meetings are also possible.

No, currently in England celebrants cannot be licensed to conduct legal ceremonies. It is because I am not bound by legalities that I can conduct your ceremony anywhere, at any time and include anything you like. Currently, in England, legal formalities are brief but must be conducted by someone licensed to do so (e.g. registrar, minister of religion). Many choose to have the short legalities conducted at a register office and then have their ceremony conducted by a celebrant.
