The pandemic has led many couples to consider having an intimate wedding. DIY wedding videography is becoming more popular as technology and mindsets evolve.

However, videography is a skill set that requires time and practice. Here are seven foolproof tricks to make perfect wedding videos— even if you aren't a pro.

1. Use Multiple Devices

Using multiple cameras is essential when creating wedding videos. Having several devices allows you to film the event from different angles and capture candid moments. During the ceremony, focusing on the couple is paramount. Yet, it's also nice to catch the wedding party and guests' reactions.

Recording with multiple devices also makes the editing process a breeze. You can cut clips together on some free video editing software for Mac or PC to create a cinematic experience to cherish always.

2. Document Small Details

Take some time to photograph and document small details in the wedding decor and venue. Task someone with shooting the event with a journalistic eye. Zoom in on the flowers, the table settings, and all other minuscule details that required months of planning.

The person filming these details should have access to the venue before guests enter.

3. Consider the Lighting

Camera lighting setup

Lighting is a considerable challenge for DIY wedding videography. Determine whether you'll need a portable lighting setup or if some strategic placement is required to avoid backlighting and shadows.

Investing in some simple light boxes or portable LED light panels will help produce clear imagery in indoor venues or dim lighting.

4. Consider the Audio

Wedding Speech and Wedding Vows

Don't overlook the audio when creating wedding videos. Smartphones and basic video cameras aren't designed for professional audio quality. These devices will pick up background noise and wind distortion.

Invest in a few small Bluetooth mics to record the vows and speeches.

5. Prioritise Stability

Minor movements— like shaky hands— have a significant impact on video quality. A few simple tripods will help prevent this issue and guarantee high-quality videos.

If you want someone to zoom in on certain parts of the ceremony, encourage them to use the tripod still. Slow, steady movements are essential for setting the scene.

6. Rehearse Ahead of Time

Wedding Venue setup

Don't wait until the week of the wedding to check the sound and lighting conditions. Instead, try to get some time in the venue before the wedding to do film blocking.

Blocking is a type of choreography used in filmmaking to determine where people will be related to the audience or camera placement. This process will help you identify any issues with lighting, angles, or audio. Use removable masking tape and photograph your marks to simplify setup on the big day.

7. Don't Think Chronologically

As you dive into the editing process, don't limit yourself to a chronological representation of the day. Some aspects of the wedding day— like getting ready— are important memories, but don't make for great cinema. Rather than following a chronological timeline, mix up your footage to encompass the essence of the day.

You can also separate audio files to create voice-overs of your vows and speeches to create more visual stimulation. For example, you could cut away from the ceremony to highlight wedding pictures and decor footage while the audio continues. You could use the same approach to the maid or matron of honour's speech to show relevant clips with a voice-over.

Creating videos is easier than ever. With basic gear and planning, you can create amazing DIY wedding videos to immortalise your day.
