Barns are a classic choice for a wedding in the British countryside, as we have so many beautiful barn wedding venues throughout the UK. With their gorgeous rustic feel and wooden interiors, barns are perfect for couples who want something relaxed yet romantic. Enjoy the countryside views, beams strewn with fairy lights and bunting and beautiful photo opportunities, all while enjoying modern heating and sound systems. While some wedding barns do have comprehensive wedding packages that include food, drink, decor and DJs; many wedding barns are available for dry hire, meaning you can really personalise your big day.

Countryside Settings

Barn venues are ideal if you've always dreamed of a countryside wedding, as by their nature they tend to be in beautiful rural areas, with fabulous views of rolling fields. As well as lots of peace and quiet, this means plenty of space for your guests to spread out. As some barn venues are part of working farms, you may find there are even some animals present at your wedding day! Think cows, sheep and maybe even llamas!

Wedding Barns are Flexible

Wedding barns work for both small and large weddings, as they come in a range of sizes. Some venues have several rooms connected so that you can hold the ceremony and reception in separate spaces. Others are smaller and will have everything in one place, so don't worry if you're dreaming of an intimate barn wedding.

As barn wedding venues are so naturally beautiful, you often don't need too much decor to make the space look perfect for a wedding. However, if you want lots of florals and decor, these venues have such versatility that you can really make the space your own!

Barn wedding venues are perfect for you if:

  • You love everything vintage.
  • You're a fan of the countryside.
  • You want beautiful wedding photo opportunities.
  • You want flexibility when it comes to the reception and ceremony set-up.
  • You want something that works in every season.

FAQs About Barn Wedding Venues

Wedding barn venues offer a versatile and charming backdrop for various wedding themes. Whether you prefer a rustic theme such as vintage or classic English garden or want to add a touch of luxury with a glamorous black tie atmosphere, a barn can be transformed to bring your vision to life. The natural textures, stones, and woods create a captivating atmosphere, and you can easily enhance the rustic setting with luxurious decor or vibrant colours. The best part is that wedding barn venues have a unique flexibility which allows you to create a memorable and personalised wedding experience.

All the popular and busy barn wedding venues will already have heating systems installed to keep your guests comfortable in any weather. It's always more of a challenge to keep the heating consistent on cold and windy days so for winter weddings, bear in mind the position of barn doors in regular use when doing your table plans, to keep older guests out of the drafts. As well as central heating within the barn, you may also have the option of fire pits or patio heaters for the outdoor spaces.

It varies from venue to venue, so we recommend checking with your chosen wedding venue before booking any fireworks. Wedding barns that are part of working farms, or are surrounded by fields with livestock, are likely to have restrictions on fireworks to avoid scaring animals. The same restrictions will also apply to sky lanterns and non-natural confetti. If you’re planning on fireworks at your barn wedding, we recommend filtering your barn venue search on Guides for Brides by "Fireworks Permitted".

Unlike a hotel or manor house, where you always expect some onsite accommodation, barn wedding venues are less likely to have bedrooms on site that you can use, although an increasing number are converting farmhouses as guest accommodation. Some barns may have nearby cottages or B&Bs, and the venue team will usually give you a list when you go for a venue viewing, but you may have to travel a little further afield for guest accommodation. Consider putting on transport or arranging taxis for your guests, and making a weekend in the country out of it.

As barn wedding venues are always in demand, we recommend considering a weekday wedding, when demand is lower, or marrying in the off-season (end of October to early March). Both options will save money without compromising on the space. Barn venues look just as beautiful in early Spring and late Autumn as they do in Summer, so you can afford to pick a season with less competition when you get such a naturally beautiful wedding setting.

It's not just the relaxed style of wedding that attracts couples to barn wedding venues year after year, or the perceived simplicity of a barn wedding. Most couples that we've spoken to say that a primary reason for choosing a barn for their wedding is so that all of their guests will be together throughout the ceremony and reception, in one space.
