Wedding invitations

Stationery
Your invitations are the guests' first glimpse of your style of wedding; modern or traditional, colourful or simple chic, handmade or printed - the choice is immense. Invitation for the wedding or evening reception, save the date and reply cards, order of service, menus and place cards can all be personalised to your taste.

Wedding stationery should express your personality and reflect the theme of your wedding, as well as informing your guests. There are literally thousands to choose from, so take time to form an idea of what you want, whether it is about colour (matching flowers, bridesmaid's dresses), motif (hearts, flowers, cupids, etc) invite shape (tall, square, conventional), presentation (embossed, arty, 3D, printed), and style (romantic, traditional, chic or thoroughly modern).

Wedding Stationery. What you may need

Thank You Card
Once you have ordered "save the date" cards and your invitations, and decided on your invitation wording, the rest of stationery can be bought closer to the wedding date and once you have a better idea of how many guests will be attending. Choose matching menus and place cards, remembering to give yourself plenty of time to hand write the name of each guest on individual place card (unless you get someone to do it for you).

It is courtesy to invite all of your guests, including those who are intimately involved in the wedding; such as the groom's parents and the minister and his wife.

Don't forget family members who won't be able to attend, as it is a courtesy to invite them just to inform them of your wedding.

Also you may want to order extra invites for errors and suddenly remembered guests!

After your wedding, there’s still that last bit of stationery you need to send off...your thank you cards. Choose your favourite photo from your special day, and upload it on to a small thank you card. Complete with a personal message from you and your partner, you can create gorgeous memorabilia from your wedding day.

Sending Save the Date cards

Save The Date
If you are having a summer wedding, or a wedding abroad, your guests need to know plenty of time in advance in order to save up, book holidays etc. Send out your save the date cards a year before the wedding, to ensure your friends and family can secure your special date in their calenders.

All your cards need to say is something simple like:

‘Save the date
For the wedding of
Sarah and Peter
10th July 2012’

A popular trend is to create save the date fridge magnets, but most send small, one sided cards which people can pin to notice boards/walls ensuring they won’t forget your special day!

Printing your own invitations

Printer

In these days of "make do and mend" it is inevitable that a few companies have launched ranges of stationery that can be printed at home, although most couples planning to print their own wedding stationery design it themselves too.

Remember to factor in the considerable cost of ink cartridges and good quality paper or card.

When to order wedding stationery

Calendar
You should start selecting your stationery between six to three months before the wedding, to allow time to order the design, especially for bespoke stationery, and to proof-read the text, hire a calligrapher if necessary, and finally to prepare the stationery for dispatch.

Wedding Ceremony, Reception and Evening Invitations (plus reply cards) are usually sent out six weeks before the wedding, but sometimes this should be earlier, eg for overseas guests who need to organise transport and accommodation, and summer holiday weddings to allow your guests plenty of notice to work around their own holiday plans. A solution is to send out 'Save the Date' cards, informing your guests in advance of your forthcoming wedding, which could also match your invitations' design.

Additional stationery required for the day should be ordered six weeks to one month before the wedding. This includes Order of Services, as well as place cards and other tableware accessories for the Wedding Reception and Evening Party, plus guest books, thank you cards and notepaper. Keep a record of your stationer's details for easy reordering.
